Mediera Beach is expensive. I stayed at a cheap hotel on the beach in Clearwater Beach. I want to say it was like a motel 6 or Days Inn, but it's been years. It did have clean rooms, a clean pool, and a counter type restaurant with about 6 booths right out of an episode of Alice. There is a state park about 10 miles up the beachcalled Dunedin park that is supposed to have some of the best shellseeking in all of Florida (massive shells). I am not sure how mobile your friend is, but it made for a really pleasant day. And not at all expensive. I think I booked through hotwire.
